The problem with distancing myself emotionally from Adam was that it was impossible when he popped up everywhere I was, being charming and flirty and caring. He knew I planned to spend time with James and followed along wherever we went. We rode go-karts, visited the aquarium, and went to a water park. At the water park, my bikini strap broke, flashing my breasts to the world. He covered me, holding my bare chest to his as he walked us over to where his T-shirt was for me to put on.

Thus, I had to buy a new bikini. And Adam offered to buy one for me. And there we were, a day later, in a beach shop searching for swimwear together—no James this time.

Alone together. Looking at glorified waterproof lingerie.

As we walked through the racks, Adam reached out and cursed while he touched something that looked like a micro bikini fit to only cover nipples.

Clearing his throat and looking uncomfortable, Adam asked, “See anything you like?”

“They’re expensive.”

“Don’t worry about it. I’m paying.” He smiled at me again. God, his smiles. “Get whatever you like.”

A red bikini stood out to me. I fingered the pretty straps, contemplating it.

“Baby,” Adam said into my ear, standing closer behind me than I realized. “If you wear that in front of me, how am I supposed to not fall at your feet and beg for mercy?”

“Mercy?”

“Beg for mercy, a kiss, a smile, anything,” he said.

Funny how this summer, when I finally decided to stay away from him, he said all the right things. “I’m going to try it on.”

An idea breached my thoughts, and I knew it was wrong. I knew it was the opposite of what I should have done. But I couldn’t help myself.

“Want to help me try it on?” I asked, glancing up at him from under my stubby lashes.

Adam made me feel desired. John the Cheater’s voicemail still echoed in my ears. Prude. Virgin. Frigid. Doesn’t know how to kiss. Doesn’t even know how to touch me.

Feeling sexy did not mean I had to be emotionally vulnerable. Some of my friends had hookups or friends with benefits. Maybe I could scratch an itch with Adam before starting college, without it turning into a possibility of being hurt again. Stupid, stupid Evie.

“You want me to help you try on the bikini?” he rasped.

“It’s got so many straps. I’m sure I’ll need help in the fitting room.” A lie. It was a normal bikini with normal straps. Heh, I lied so well, someone might think I had a Y-chromosome.

Adam’s eyes narrowed; his lips pursed. But his excitement to see me in the bikini overpowered his suspicion of whatever game I was playing.

Considering how empty the beach store was—everyone traveled to the beach with a swimsuit, sunglasses, a surfboard, etc., so they didn’t need to buy them—Adam and I easily slipped into a dressing room together undetected.

Closing the door, I moved to stand in front of the mirror. Adam’s back was against the wall, giving me all the space he could.
